# Set up Google Chat

How to add an AI bot to Google Chat: install the eesel app in a space and connect it to an agent.

Setting up Google Chat for your AI agent takes a few clicks in Google Chat and one page in eesel. This page walks through it screen by screen. You add the eesel app to a space, and eesel posts a card that links the space to one of your agents. You do it once per space. For what your teammate does once it is in, see the [Google Chat overview](/integrations/communication/google-chat.md).

## Before you begin

* You need a **Google Workspace** account with Google Chat, and a space you can add apps to.
* You need **edit rights** in your eesel workspace, since the person who connects the space picks the agent.
* If your Google Workspace admin limits which Chat apps people can add, ask them to allow **eesel AI Agents for Chat** first.

## Walkthrough

{% step %}

### Open the space's menu

Open Google Chat and go to the space you want your agent in. Click the space name at the top.

<figure><img src="https://3732419023-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2xXO0947TYoPIhGoBgSE%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-589d7ba9bc2402d6cbe3a0d8c80a4f8791b0e36c%2Fgoogle-chat-space-name.png?alt=media" alt="A Google Chat space with a callout on the space name at the top of the conversation"><figcaption><p>Click the space name to open its menu.</p></figcaption></figure>

Choose **Apps & integrations**.

<figure><img src="https://3732419023-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2xXO0947TYoPIhGoBgSE%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-6dd1cf3f7d7faadd2fa27645b7388ec1c4ff64b3%2Fgoogle-chat-apps-integrations.png?alt=media" alt="The Google Chat space menu open, with a callout on Apps and integrations"><figcaption><p>The space menu, with Apps &#x26; integrations highlighted.</p></figcaption></figure>

For a direct message instead of a space, click **New chat**, search for eesel and start the chat. eesel posts the same connect card in the direct message, so skip to [Connect the space to an agent](#connect-the-space-to-an-agent).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Add the eesel app

Click **Add apps**.

<figure><img src="https://3732419023-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2xXO0947TYoPIhGoBgSE%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-24bfcf901adbb7af65a05636c51423f854dfdcd9%2Fgoogle-chat-add-apps.png?alt=media" alt="The Apps and integrations page of a Google Chat space with no apps yet, and a callout on the Add apps button"><figcaption><p>The space's Apps &#x26; integrations page.</p></figcaption></figure>

Search for **eesel**, select **eesel AI Agents for Chat**, and click **Add**.

<figure><img src="https://3732419023-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2xXO0947TYoPIhGoBgSE%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-7c31ed8a3756b530eaca74262a69277b18896311%2Fgoogle-chat-search-eesel.png?alt=media" alt="The Add apps dialog with eesel AI Agents for Chat selected in the search box and a callout on the Add button"><figcaption><p>eesel AI Agents for Chat, selected and ready to add.</p></figcaption></figure>

Google asks you to confirm the install. Click **Install app**.

<figure><img src="https://3732419023-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2xXO0947TYoPIhGoBgSE%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-cd1f223d001818641acfcb029006b47feb4c2a3f%2Fgoogle-chat-install-app.png?alt=media" alt="Google Chat&#x27;s Install app dialog for eesel AI Agents for Chat by eesel AI, with links to the terms of service and privacy policy, and a callout on Install app"><figcaption><p>Google's install confirmation.</p></figcaption></figure>

The app now shows in the space's app list.

<figure><img src="https://3732419023-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2xXO0947TYoPIhGoBgSE%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-401051356914e1d60b6ceac017002aff092956c0%2Fgoogle-chat-app-added.png?alt=media" alt="The space&#x27;s Apps and integrations page listing eesel AI Agents for Chat, described as AI teammate for Google Chat"><figcaption><p>eesel added to the space.</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Connect the space to an agent

Go back to the conversation. eesel has posted a short hello and a **Connect this space to eesel** card. Click **Connect this space**.

<figure><img src="https://3732419023-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2xXO0947TYoPIhGoBgSE%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-d5c41193c52d4a44135a1cbeb795bfefeecf8d56%2Fgoogle-chat-connect-card.png?alt=media" alt="eesel&#x27;s hello message in the Google Chat space, followed by a Connect this space to eesel card with a callout on the Connect this space button"><figcaption><p>The hello message and the Connect this space card.</p></figcaption></figure>

A page opens in the eesel dashboard. Sign in if you are asked, and you come straight back to it. It shows which eesel workspace the space connects to. Pick the agent that should answer here, then click **Connect this space**.

<figure><img src="https://3732419023-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2xXO0947TYoPIhGoBgSE%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-0b429559c7d848fb5001c873ff223b3d2cd35295%2Fgoogle-chat-pick-agent.png?alt=media" alt="The eesel page titled Connect this space to eesel, showing the workspace, an agent picker, and a Connect this space button, with callouts on both"><figcaption><p>Picking the agent that answers in this space.</p></figcaption></figure>

The link lasts one hour and works once. If it has expired, type **connect** in the space and eesel posts a fresh one.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Check the space is connected

The page says **Space connected**.

<figure><img src="https://3732419023-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2xXO0947TYoPIhGoBgSE%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-7300afb2247352a500f3ce908231cab0a919990c%2Fgoogle-chat-space-connected.png?alt=media" alt="The eesel page saying Space connected, and that eesel now answers in Google Chat when mentioned in a space or messaged directly"><figcaption><p>The confirmation page in eesel.</p></figcaption></figure>

Back in Google Chat, eesel posts which agent now answers in the space.

<figure><img src="https://3732419023-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2xXO0947TYoPIhGoBgSE%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-9a8c1d2ffc96467d54720e6df6514c4fe01b656b%2Fgoogle-chat-connected-message.png?alt=media" alt="The Google Chat space with a new eesel message saying it is connected to the chosen agent, and to mention it or message it directly"><figcaption><p>eesel confirming the connection in the space.</p></figcaption></figure>

**Check it worked.** Type **help** in the space. eesel replies with the agent's status, the apps it can use, and how to change or disconnect it. In your dashboard, **Integrations > Google Chat** shows **Connected**, with the mention automation switched on.

<figure><img src="https://3732419023-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2xXO0947TYoPIhGoBgSE%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-f469a0a15640025d184410a4ac230e76ff244c03%2Fgoogle-chat-help.png?alt=media" alt="eesel&#x27;s help reply in the space, listing its status, the connected integrations, how to change which agent answers, and how to disconnect"><figcaption><p>The help reply in a connected space.</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Ask your first question

Type @ and pick **eesel AI Agents for Chat** from the list, then ask a question. Typing "@eesel" by hand posts as plain text and does not reach it. It answers in a thread. Keep replying in that thread, mentioning it each time, and it keeps the context.

<figure><img src="https://3732419023-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2xXO0947TYoPIhGoBgSE%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-8b663f03114bee02d8394df0e0c2c6093469f3bf%2Fgoogle-chat-follow-up.png?alt=media" alt="A Google Chat thread where a teammate follows up on eesel&#x27;s answer about best sellers, and eesel looks into the order behind them"><figcaption><p>A follow-up in the same thread.</p></figcaption></figure>

To shape how it answers in Google Chat, ask in the dashboard chat or edit the mention automation on your **Automations** page. To have it work in your other apps from the thread, see the [Google Chat overview](/integrations/communication/google-chat.md#set-up-eesel-in-google-chat).
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Several spaces and agents

Repeat these steps for each space. Each space is connected on its own, so different spaces can point at different agents. A support space can use your support agent while a sales space uses another.

To move a space to a different agent, remove eesel from the space and add it again, then pick the new agent.

## Troubleshooting

<details>

<summary>eesel is not in the Add apps search</summary>

Search for **eesel**; the app is listed as **eesel AI Agents for Chat**. If it still does not appear, your Google Workspace admin may limit which Chat apps people can install. Ask them to allow it in the Google Admin console.

</details>

<details>

<summary>No Connect this space card appeared</summary>

Type **connect** in the space and eesel posts the card. If you added eesel by mentioning it in a message, mention **eesel AI Agents for Chat** once more and the card comes with its reply.

</details>

<details>

<summary>The connect page says the link is invalid, expired or already used</summary>

A link lasts one hour and works once. Type **connect** in the space for a fresh one.

</details>

<details>

<summary>The connect page says you don't have edit access</summary>

Connecting needs edit rights in your eesel workspace. Ask a workspace admin to connect the space, or to give you edit rights.

</details>

<details>

<summary>The agent you want is not in the picker</summary>

The picker lists the agents in the eesel workspace shown under **Connecting to**, which is the one your eesel account opens by default. Check you are signed in to eesel with the right account.

</details>

## FAQ

<details>

<summary>How do I add a bot to a Google Chat space?</summary>

Click the space name, then **Apps & integrations > Add apps**, search for the bot and click **Add**. For eesel, search for **eesel AI Agents for Chat**, then click **Connect this space** on the card it posts to pick the agent that answers.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What do I need before I set up Google Chat with eesel?</summary>

A Google Workspace account with Google Chat, a space you can add apps to, and edit rights in your eesel workspace. If your Google Workspace admin restricts Chat apps, they need to allow eesel first.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Does my Google Workspace admin need to approve eesel?</summary>

Only if your organization limits which Chat apps people can add. Otherwise anyone who can add apps to a space can add eesel. Connecting the space to an agent is then done by someone with edit rights in eesel.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I set up Google Chat without the eesel dashboard?</summary>

Almost. You add the app and click the card in Google Chat. The card opens a short eesel page where you pick the agent, which needs you signed in to eesel.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.eesel.ai/integrations/communication/google-chat/google-chat-setup.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
